Southampton have sacked manager Mauricio Pellegrino following a dismal run of form that has put the Saints firmly in the relegation mire.

The straw that broke the camels back proved to come on Saturday with the heavy3-0 defeat toNewcastle United on Saturday, with it now being unknown who will take charge of the FA Cup quarter-final with Wigan Athletic ahead of the worldwide break.

"The club will look to appoint a new management team as soon as possible", Southamtpon said in a statement on their website.

The new manager will need to galvanise a squad short on confidence. The club also sacked two of Pellegrino's assistants.

The south-coast club took action two days after losing 3-0 at Newcastle, following which Pellegrino said some of his players "gave up". The club sit 17th in the league on 28 points, a point ahead of Crystal Palace and Stoke, with eight games left to play. They've won just one of their last 17 games.

Neville added clubs are more and more willing to change managers this late in the season, such is the financial loss of relegation from the Premier League.

Pellegrino's assistant Carlos Compagnucci and assistant first team Coach Xavier Tamarit will also leave the club with immediate effect.

Saints were beaten 3-0 by Newcastle United on Saturday and lie just one point above the dreaded drop zone. "I observed some players who gave up and we can not show this, to be honest", he told reporters at his post-match press conference.

Most Southampton fans appeared elated.

Southampton, who sold centre-back Virgil van Dijk for a record-breaking £75 million ($102 million, 84 million euros) in January, have started leaking goals in recent weeks, conceding 19 in their last 10 Premier League outings.

'I think Pellegrino has had a good opportunity to turn things around.
