Smoke alarms are required on every level of the home and outside of each sleeping area. Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years.

WSPY spoke with Little Rock-Fox Fire Chief Greg Witek about why citizens should check the batteries in their smoke alarms when they change the clocks.

Haney advises families to replace outdated smoke alarms, if possible, with newer models that feature 10-year sealed lithium batteries. Alarms that are more than 10 years old should be replaced.

No matter what type of smoke alarms are used in a home, they should be tested monthly - including hard-wired units connected to the home's electrical system.
