Mahatma Gandhi's Statue In Kerala and BR Ambedkar's Bust In Chennai Damaged

The Mahatma Gandhi statue at Taliparamba here was vandalised by an unidentified person on Thursday morning.

Kannur: In keeping with the flavour of the season, a statue of Mahatma Gandhi was damaged by unknown persons in the Thaliparamba area of Kannur. Earlier in the day, a statue of the Dalit icon Babasaheb Ambedkar was damaged in Meerut's Mawana Khurd in Uttar Pradesh.

The man hurled stones at the statue, broke the spectacles and destroyed the garland on the statue.

There have been numerous incidents of statues being vandalised in various parts of the country.

A series of incidents of desecration of statues of various leaders, including Ambedkar, rationalist E V Ramasamy "Periyar" and Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee, have been reported from different parts of the country over the past few days. The police have launched an investigation into the case.

The CPM (M) has called it "communist phobia", while the BJP has said that the statue was bulldozed by the people "oppressed" by the Left.

While H Raja has since expressed his heartful regret for his comments, the BJP went on damage control mode.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had yesterday strongly condemned the vandalism and warned of stern action against the guilty.

MHA has asked the states that they must take all necessary measures to prevent such incidents.
