VAR process lacks transparency and leaves everybody guessing

Football's lawmakers on Saturday approved video assistant referee technology (VAR) for this summer's World Cup, in one of the biggest changes to the sport in years.

Gianni Infantino, FIFA President, who said that the IFAB's announcement would be discussed in reference to this year's FIFA World Cup later, noted, "The decision on the World Cup in Russian Federation on VAR will be taken at the next Council meeting in Colombia on 16 March", who also though confirmed that he was "very positive about VAR".

International FA Board have unanimously voted for the use of Video Assisted Referee (VAR) at the forth coming World cup in Russian Federation.

The trials have already highlighted the impact of the system on key decisions, which include goals, penalties, straight red cards and cases of mistaken identity, although the time taken for referrals during matches and confusion for coaches and fans watching has led to significant criticism.

IFAB is the universal decision-making body for the Laws of football.

However, the introduction of the technology will most definitely prevent future occurrence of incidents like Maradona's "Hand of God" in the '86 World Cup final, and Frank Lampard's shot, which clearly crossed the line after hitting the crossbar, but was not given as a goal, in the last 16 stage of the 2010 World Cup against Germany.

"We need to have a much clearer idea of "clear and obvious errors".

"Our decision to vote in favour of VAR was not taken lightly, but after lengthy research are confident it is a move that is in the best interests of the game".

The implementation of the VAR system has been one of Infantino's main projects since he was elected in February 2016.

It is being used this season in Germany and Italy on a trial basis, as well as selected cup matches in England.

At the 2014 World Cup, FIFA deployed goal-line technology. Goal-line systems are used at UEFA's European Championship and in the Premier League.

Video assistant referee is an assistant that reviews decisions made by the officials to ensure accuracy by confirming decisions or overturning potential decisions.

In Russia, FIFA plans to use a central command center for VAR teams working away from stadiums to communicate with referees - a system adopted by American professional sports leagues.

The AGM also agreed "additional" substitute during extra time, as well as approving the use of electronic and communication equipment in the technical area.
