South Korean goaltender Shin So-jung added: "It is the first time to be cheered on by such a large crowd and I'm just so thankful".

Also in action Monday night was the women's halfpipe competition, and more freestyle skiers took to the slopes to try and land a spot on the Olympic podium.

Since the women's hockey started as Olympic in Nagano-1998, precisely with the USA victory, all the subsequent gold medals were hung by the Canadians. She had 15 going into PyeongChang and has notched two goals and an assist in four games.

So Olympic agent Brant Feldman chose a totally neutral color to attend the preliminary round women's hockey game between the arch rivals last Thursday at the Pyeongchang Winter Games: green.

"Sports are - they're breaking down the barriers", said Sarah Murray, the normally-stolid Korean team coach who stood in the players' box and wept after the Tuesday game. "In Canada, the expectation is always to win gold".

In the kind of offensive burst US coach Robb Stauber has been waiting for, the Americans, silver medalists in Sochi and Vancouver, converted on three of six powerplays. These American players leave little doubt that they're seeking vengeance. But Canada has won the last five matchups.

It is the fifth gold medal game appearance in six Olympic tournaments for the American women who won the first women's ice hockey tournament in 1998.

One item of concern for the Americans was the hard hit United States captain Meghan Duggan inflicted on Finland's Ronja Savolainen, sending her face-first into the boards. "It's gone into overtime". "If the North's staff was different, if the North's players were different, if our players were different or our staff was any different, I don't think this would have worked".

Both sides view parts of the past differently, perhaps not surprisingly, burying the pain and clinging to the hope.

"Lucky that everyone's plans are falling into place and you have two great opponents at the end", she said. Heading into the game the USA had been one-for-11 on the powerplay during the tournament. Asked this week about the relevance of 2014, Amanda Kessel, the United States' 26-year-old forward who's playing in her second Winter Games, said, "Tough to say".

"We have something special here and we're ready our coaching staff has prepared us as best they can and we just need to go out and just play", Canada forward Meghan Agosta told reporters.

The Americans wrapped up pool play at these games with a 2-1 loss to Canada.

The imprint is much bolder when you win gold, obviously, which brings further context to Thursday's latest clash with the Americans.
