Those loyal to Donald Trump went to great lengths to hide his alleged affair with former Playboy Playmate Karen McDougal through secret meetings, pay-offs and legal agreements, according to Ronan Farrow's latest report in The New Yorker.

McDougal, in her first on-the-record comments about A.M.I.'s handling of her story, declined to discuss the details of her relationship with Trump, for fear of violating the agreement she reached with the company. Without commenting on Trump specifically, McDougal conceded that she had a growing awareness of the broader implications of the President's situation.

Ms Daniels, whose real name is Stefanie Clifford, has also said she had an extramarital affair with Mr Trump beginning in 2006. Later, talking to NBC a White House official stated that the President of the United States had denied all the allegations levelled by the former Playboy model, McDougal, and termed it as "fake news".

And the first lady's spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham tried to pour cold water on any speculation about the first couple's relationship, saying: "With her schedule, it was easier to meet him on the plane".

McDougal confirmed in the story published online Friday that she wrote the account, but said she was constrained in what else she could say publicly about Trump because she'd signed a confidentiality agreement with American Media Inc., the publisher of the National Enquirer, which had paid her $150,000 for her story.

The New Yorker article, citing previously undisclosed texts, emails and legal records, elaborates on a Wall Street Journal report in 2016 about a convoluted deal requiring McDougal to keep quiet about the alleged affair. "The President says he never had a relationship with McDougal". "But now I pray to live right, and make right with the wrongs that I have done", she told Farrow.

Former American Media employees told The New Yorker that the company's chairman and chief executive, David Pecker, who is close with Trump, routinely bought stories with no intention of running them, sometimes using the pieces as leverage. McDougal disclosed that the affair between the porn star and Trump was at the same time.

In that case, the president's personal lawyer Michael Cohen admitted to paying Daniels $130,000 but refused to say why. Another 26 percent said that they were unsure.
