Kane Williamson back injury New Zealand England T20 tri-series cricket

Kane Williamson and Martin Guptill slammed half-centuries as New Zealand went on to amass 196 for five and later went on to defend the total by 12 runs in the fourth Twenty20 global against England in Wellington to register their maiden win in the ongoing Tri-Series.

New Zealand leapt into the box seat to face Australia in next week's Twenty20 tri-series cricket final, and ended their three-match losing streak with a 12-run win over England in Wellington on Tuesday night.

England's bowlers were relatively loose, with legspinner Adil Rashid (2-36) and speedster Mark Wood (2-51) the most successful.

A blinding 47 off 24 balls from opener Alex Hales and 59 off 40 Dawid Malan gave England some hope but they didn't get sufficient support as the required run rate steadily climbed. Dawid Malan fought a lone battle with a valiant 59 and the lower order threatened, but Sodhi, Mitchell Santner and Trent Boult took two wickets each to wrap the game.

But the gamble backfired as the wicket held up and New Zealand's batsmen finally hit their stride after three straight T20 losses.

A third successive defeat for the English, including two to Australia, means a trans-Tasman final will be assured if the Black Caps can beat Australia in Auckland on Friday.

England's bowlers had not done their batsman any favours with their display, especially with the tourists having scored 155 and 137 in two defeats by Australia going into the match.

Opener Guptill raced to 65 off 40 balls andWilliamson accelerated late in his 72 off 46 as both put somemodest form by their lofty standards behind them.

Senior lawyer and social activist Asma Jahangir passes away
The Indian film industry today mourned the death of Pakistan's renowned human rights lawyer and social activist, Asma Jahangir . Pakistan's former foreign minister, Hina Rabbani Khar, tweeted, "There' s no one who can match her bravery and courage".

Rashid struck again on his next ball as Colin de Grandhomme was brilliantly caught by Chris Jordan at long-off.

Jos Buttler was England captain, with Eoin Morgan still sidelined by injury, and he put the Kiwis into bat because of the uncertain nature of the drop-in pitch at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington.

"New Zealand's plans have worked, they won the game".

Run out of Vince by skipper Williamson and Sodhi's second victim skipper Buttler saw England slide further in the run chase. We got plenty in the power play and there partnerships throughout.

"The team were great, we did know how the wicket would play and we were able to build partnerships throughout". It played a lot better than it looked and we got off to a good start.

"You can write what you like, that's fine", Williamson said.

"We'll need to think on our feet and adjust quickly".
