Syria says it has more 'surprises' for Israel in next attack

The other side of the ledger has much more to offer. On Saturday, Israel's military said it shot down an Iranian drone that took off from a base in Syria and infiltrated Israeli airspace. The drone was a copied version of an American stealth drone, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, which was downed in Iran in 2011. The prime minister has been seeking to persuade Russian Federation to limit Iran's presence near Israeli territory and to stop it from gaining a military foothold in Syria. Most notable is the heave damage the Israeli military was able to inflict on Iranian locations, given the Iranians seemed to believe Israel was unaware of them.

The biggest confrontation between the two sides occurred on Saturday, when Israel attacked what it claimed to be Iranian bases, which sent a drone into its airspace. During the IAF operation, Syrian surface-to-air missiles downed an Israeli F-16I fighter jet.

Reuters reported (February 6, 2018) that, "A Turkish soldier was killed in a rocket and mortar attack in northwest Syria (Idlib Province) as Turkish forces were setting up a military post in the largest remaining stronghold of opposition to President Bashar al-Assad".

Conricus says that in response Israel destroyed the Iranian site in central Syria that launched it. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met in Moscow with Vladimir Putin in late January to discuss the need for security cooperation and deconfliction in the region. Last weekend's clashes on Israel's northern border occurred within this context.

Israel will be spinning its wheels if it tries to thwart Iran's plans on its own. Syria represents Iran's first significant military success overseas in recent years.

In other words, Russian Federation has been able to thread the hard needle that allowed it to back Syria and indirectly aid Iran for two years plus without making an outright enemy of Israel.

"Israel will continue to enforce its red lines", Katz tweeted on Sunday. This is particularly crucial for Iran as its regional foes have chosen to sit on the sidelines in terms of direct military action against Iran in Syria. In the last few weeks, the proxy conflicts between Israel and Iran and Turkey and the Kurds have heated up in particular.

Lebanon urged concerned countries to "rein in" Israel.

Where does Russian Federation fit in? He has to decide whether to keep backing Syria and Iran or decrease his risks in the region. Thanks to the growing Saudi-Israeli alliance, Russian Federation can easily work with both of them without conflict. But whether Russian Federation can really control the conflict moving forward remains to be seen, and surely serious discussions are underway in Moscow regarding last Saturday's events. After the incident, the U.S. State Department, among others, expressed support for "Israel's sovereign right to defend itself". But it is not yet clear if Washington intends to do anything further, as America's strategy in Syria remains opaque.

In January, a USA -led coalition unveiled a plan to set up a new border force of 30,000 Kurdish fighters in northeastern Syria, raising alarms in the region that the White House may be helping to cement an autonomous Kurdish enclave that could further divide the country.

Lebanon is protesting Israel's use of its airspace to target Syria, saying it will complain to the U.N. Security Council.

Last weekend's conflagration led to the first shoot-down of an Israeli aircraft in over 35 years.

A flood of Israeli trash talk against Iran also followed. In today's reality of information warfare, such an image indicates a highly meaningful accomplishment. In response, Israel carried out airstrikes in Syria, including against what it described as Iranian targets. But is Israel really looking for a fight? While none of the parties involved have an interest in a full-scale military conflict, the conflict of interests is too fundamental to have been fully resolved.
