A Google R&D team wants to bring Smart Reply to all your chat apps

The Reply app is from Area 120, a group at Google focused on quickly iterated experimental products that the public are able to test. The Area 120 team is aiming for the app to have support among major messaging apps such as Hangouts, Allo, Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger, Android Messages, Skype, Twitter DMs, and Slack. Now, a team inside Google's internal incubator Area 120 is working to bring the Smart Reply feature to other chat applications. For example, if a message like "We're waiting for you!" comes in, Reply can get your attention and ask you to respond. Last month, Google announced the addition of Smart Reply within Messages for those users on its mobile phone service, Project Fi.

The system is based on Smart Reply, which uses artificial intelligence to suggest one-line or quick responses to email in Gmail or Hangouts. Smart Reply functionality could save on-the-go workers time while improving collaboration. It was programmed to automatically guide instant replies to the emails on the basis of message context received by the particular user. Since it has not yet been availed for all of the users of Android Messages service till the date.

Area 120 has sent invitations out to testers with a brief description of the Reply app, which basically adds Smart Reply responses to non-Google messaging apps, as well as to Google apps that don't have Smart Reply, such as Hangouts. For example, when one's phone is on silent mode, Reply can bypass this and play the usual alert tone when it determines that a message is too urgent. For instance, users will be given the reply options "Yes", "No", or "I am here" when they receive questions such as "Are you at the restaurant?" or "When can you be home?" As you can see in the screenshot below, Reply looks a lot like Google's native Smart Replies.

Now it seems that Google wants to bring the feature to more chat apps, and not just those made by Google.

The other features that Reply brings include Do not disturb.
