Rachel Brand, The Third-Ranking Justice Department Official, Is Stepping Down

The third-ranking official in the Department of Justice-who would oversee the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election if Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was sacked, resigns or recuses himself-is reportedly stepping down. She is expected to take a job as general counsel in the private sector.

During the Obama administration, Brand served on the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, which studied the 702 program two years ago.

The Walmart president and CEO, Doug McMillon, said Walmart "is fortunate to have a leader of Rachel Brand's stature join the company". His broadsides have strained morale at the institution known for its vaunted independence from the White House. He previously held the same position from February of 2017 until May 22nd, 2017, when Brand was officially appointed by President Donald Trump. "And it is Rosenstein, thanks to the recusal of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who authorized Mueller's investigation in the first place - and who is the only government official with the legal authority to directly fire Mueller and otherwise terminate his investigation", Prof.

Rachel Brand is stepping down from her third-ranking role in the Justice Department.

She was the Justice Department's third in command.

Brand, who has served in the last three administrations as a political appointee and is widely respected, has mostly managed to stay out of the spotlight amid the president's Twitter rampages. That memo states that the person next in line is Solicitor General Noel Francisco. "And so with every presumably voluntary departure of someone like Brand, the political costs of direct presidential interference with the Russian Federation investigation may well go down".
