Israel launched air raids in Syria yesterday after one of its fighter jets crashed while under Syrian anti-aircraft fire. "It's a question whether the Iranians are only interested in deterring Israel, or some elements in Iran are looking for a semi-war situation of engaging proxies in Syria against Israel - of turning the Golan Heights into another front", he said.

During the operation, Syrian anti-aircraft missiles were fired at the aircraft and the pilots of one of the planes ejected themselves when they recognized that one of the missiles had locked onto their jet.

Netanyahu's remarks came as he convened his security chiefs for consultations on Saturday's confrontations which followed Israel's interception of what it said was an Iranian drone launched from Syria.

The Britain-based Observatory, which monitors the Syria war through a network of activists on the ground, says the second round targeted outposts in the southwestern suburbs of Damascus.

Danny Danon, Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, urged the UN Security Council to condemn Iran's actions and halt its "provocations".

IDF spokesman Lt Col Jonathan Conricus told CNN that one Israeli aircraft came down, with all others returning safely to base. The drone was tracked by an Apache helicopter and shot down.

ISRAEL has struck a dozen Syrian and Iranian targets inside Syria after an Israeli fighter jet crashed under fire from Syrian air defences, the military said.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran has advisory presence in Syria at the request of the country's legitimate and constitutional government", Qassemi said. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert, commenting on Israeli military action in Syria, stressed that the United States "strongly supports" Israel's right to defend itself.

Meanwhile, Russia's Foreign Ministry said that "the latest developments and attacks on Syria were viewed with serious concern" and that the loss to Syria and damage resulting from them were being examined.

"Such an aggressive policy practiced by Israel threatens stability in the region", said its Foreign Ministry in a statement.

Insisting that "Israel seeks peace", the PM vowed that Israelis "will continue to defend ourselves with determination against any attack against us and against any attempt by Iran to establish a military presence against us in Syria or anywhere else". This morning Iran brazenly violated Israel's sovereignty.

Conricus declined to give details on the drone's presumed mission or whether it was armed. "But now Iran has openly defied the rules by sending the drone, so Israel hit back forcefully", says Gabriel Ben-Dor, a University of Haifa Middle East specialist.

After the drone went down, Israel sent jets into Syria and blew up the command center located at an airbase near Palmyra.

Amid the cross-border escalation, one of Israel's F-16 was downed by Syrian air-defense systems.

In a statement quoted by the Israel Broadcasting Corporation, Brigadier General Tomer Bar, a senior Israel Air Force officer, said the Israeli aircraft was downed by a surface-to-air missile but he did not specify. "We are willing, prepared, and capable to exact a heavy price on anyone that attacks us". "I'm not sure the Iranians want a full scale escalation and neither do we".

The incident marks the most significant confrontation between Israel and Syria and Iran since the Syrian civil war began in March 2011.

The regime said it intercepted the missiles and destroyed majority, according to SANA.
