'Disturbed' by Maldives emergency, monitoring situation carefully, says India

The President has been compelled to declare a state of emergency due to the risk currently posed to national security' said a statement from Yameen's office on Monday

The political chaos of Maldives - the honeymoon islands - deepens further after the chief justice and other top judges of the Supreme Court were arrested on Tuesday following proclamation of emergency by President Abdulla Yameen.

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres urged the Maldives government Tuesday to end the state of emergency and ensure the safety of its citizens, including judges and politicians who have been arrested.

He also called for the Indian envoy and that country's military to be sent, declaring: "We are asking for a physical presence".

The Maldives has been in political turmoil following the Supreme Court's decision to release jailed opposition members and reports of possible impeachment motions.

Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Judge Ali Hameed were taken into police custody early in the morning.

A state of emergency has been called in the Maldives for 15 days amid a political crisis.

Eva Abdulla, an opposition legislator said the latest declaration of State of Emergency "is an indication of President Yameen's desperation"."It only serves to show an isolated man who no longer has the confidence of the Maldivian people and independent institutions".

Nasheed has said that President Yameen has illegally declared martial law.

"This state of emergency is the only way I can determine how deep this plot, this coup, goes", Mr Yameen said.

Mr Nasheed was an opposition leader under a former government and became the country's first democratically elected leader in 2008, but was ousted and jailed in 2012.

Just as the police surrounded Gayoom's house today, the former president said he didn't do anything worthy of arrest and declared they would not give up on the ongoing reforms.

There was no immediate response from India or the United States, though both have called on Mr Yameen to obey the supreme court order.

"You should avoid areas of demonstrations and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations", the USA embassy in Colombo said in its updated travel advice on Tuesday.

Officials say the court has not properly responded to a series of letters citing problems with implementing the order, including that the cases against the political prisoners are at different legal stages. Gayoom, the former dictator, is the half-brother of President Yameen. Nasheed has been living in exile in Britain since 2016 after being given asylum when he traveled there on medical leave from prison.

The exiled Maldives opposition leader Mohamed Nasheed called on the USA and India Tuesday (Feb 6) to help remove the country's president from office, saying he had "illegally" declared martial law.

It also paves the way for Mohamed Nasheed to return and run for President.
