Mets reportedly sign Todd Frazier to a two-year, $17 million contract

Mets pull Todd Frazier out of free agency for $17M

The Mets added some instant pop to their lineup Monday, reportedly reaching a deal with free-agent third baseman Todd Frazier.

Anything the Mets may get out of David Wright this year is a bonus and now they have a legitimate third baseman by signing the soon to be 32 year old Frazier for the next two years. As is customary at this point in the reporting/signing process, the deal is pending a physical.

In 147 games between the White Sox and Yankees in 2017, Frazier hit.213/.344/.428 with a.772 OPS.

Frazier, a welcome midseason acquisition for the Yankees a year ago, will play third base, filling a hole that has always been vacated by an ailing David Wright and temporarily occupied by Asdrubal Cabrera, a natural shortstop. He went 7-for-24 in the ALCS against the future World Series-winning Astros with a home run and four RBI, and had a regular season fielding percentage of.960 with 13 errors, which is above league average at least.

The Mets made the deal a week before they open spring training in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Shortly after, Youngs went down with what looked like a nasty knee injury after his left leg appeared to get trapped in the ruck. However, there are clear signs of improvement under coach Conor O'Shea despite Italy's continued problems in defence.

Last month, responding to fans' criticism, Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon defended the team's offseason spending and said more moves were likely.

That's not to say Frazier is sitting in a similarly precarious position but that his addition may not make the same kind of impact to New York's offense it might have two or three years ago.

The Mets began past year with a $157 million payroll for its 40-man roster and trimmed it to $149 million as injuries and poor pitching wrecked their postseason chances.

The Mets were in the market for some infield help as David Wright remains a major question mark after missing all of last season and then undergoing back surgery in October. He hasn't played in the big leagues since May 2016. The Mets aren't expected to be contenders next season.
