The White House will withdraw the nomination of Kathleen Hartnett White, the former Texas environmental official tapped to lead the Council on Environmental Quality, a White House official said Sunday.

Ms. Hartnett White, who had served for six years under Texas Gov. Rick Perry, was chosen to chair the White House's Council on Environmental Quality, a key administration panel that deals with all aspects of scientific and environmental policy.

Hartnett-White, a former Texas regulator, eked through the confirmation process a year ago with only Republican votes despite radical views on issues like climate change and a humiliating public hearing at which she struggled with basic science questions.

"I'm not a scientist, but in my personal capacity, I have many questions that remain unanswered by current climate policy", she said at her confirmation hearing.

Citing anonymous administration officials, the Post says Harnett's nomination couldn't win enough favorable support, "with some Senate Republicans raising questions about her expertise".

The Washington Post initially revealed the choice to drop Hartnett White's selection. "When it comes to insulating our towns and cities from climate change, or protecting our children from toxic pollutants and chemicals, there should be no compromise". Carbon dioxide emissions contribute to global warming.

Democrats and environmental activists hailed the decision to pull the nomination. But she said she was uncertain about the extent to which humans cause it. But the Trump administration put her name forward again last month. Michael Dourson, whose nomination to become the Environmental Protection Agency's top chemical safety official drew widespread criticism, withdrew from consideration in December after it became clear that the Senate probably would not confirm him.

"White", Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), the top Democrat on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, said in a statement late Saturday.

White was a senior fellow at the Texas Public Policy Foundation, a conservative think tank that received funding from Koch Industries, ExxonMobil, Chevron and other fossil-fuels companies.
