A post on the Windows blog outlines changes to servicing and support of Windows and Office.

Past year at Ignite, we announced Office 2019 - the next perpetual version of Office that includes apps (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and Skype for Business) and servers (including Exchange, SharePoint, and Skype for Business). The explanation for the extension back then was that organizations were still getting used to Microsoft's Windows as a Service approach, where new operating system features arrive more frequently. This means that Office 2019's extended support will end on 14th October 2025.

The plan is reportedly to make S Mode available for most versions of Windows 10 (with new Core+ and Workstation variants being the exceptions).

The vast majority of holdouts from Windows 10 are enterprise customers who have stuck with Windows 7 as there has been no compelling reason for them to upgrade. Each LTSC release has five years of "mainstream support" followed by five years of "extended support", which Microsoft now calls its "Fixed Lifecycle Policy".

The Nuclear Posture Review released Friday includes a graphic showing Status-6 as one of Russia's delivery systems. Shanahan maintained that "this clarification is stabilizing" and would "lower the risk of nuclear use by anyone".

So those running Windows 7 or 8 are out of luck if they wanted to plump for the standalone Office apps, as opposed to Microsoft's cloud-based subscription option, Office 365.

Microsoft said this is because "As the pace of change accelerates, it has become imperative to move our software to a more modern cadence". According to a survey of enterprise IT admins past year, 68% of businesses are still running Windows 7, compared to 13% on Windows 10.

The lead that Windows 10 now has over Windows 7 is still pretty small, though it is unlikely that Windows 7 will again take the lead over Windows 10 next month. Like previous versions of Office, it will come with five years of standard support, but the extended support is being dropped from five extra years to just two.

Office 2019 The news is slightly more alarming with regard to future Office support, including Office 365 ProPlus and the coming perpetual-license Office 2019 product. The cost of unlocking full access would depend on what you're running: Windows 10 Home S users could unlock to the regular Home release for free, while those using Windows 10 Pro S would have to pay the previously mentioned $49. Nor will unsupported Windows 10 semi-annual releases.
