The Uttar Pradesh Police on Wednesday morning succeeded in arresting the prime suspect Saleem in the killing of Abhishek Gupta alias Chandan, who died during Tiranga Yatra on the Republic Day.

In a report sent to the Union Home Ministry on the Kasganj incident, the State Government said the police swung into action after the violence was reported and brought it under control quickly.

The Centre on Tuesday sought a report from the Yogi Adityanath government on the communal clashes in Kasganj. The report contains details about the arrests made by the Uttar Pradesh Police and circumstances leading to Chandan's death.

Demanding a government job for a member of Gupta's family, the VHP also requested Adityanath to give a compensation of Rs.50 lakh and a house to the kin of the deceased.

Also, a Congress delegation led by its UP unit chief Raj Babbar and national secretary and former MLA Vivek Bansal was stopped from going to Kasganj.

The state police said that it has arrested Saleem Javaid, who used to run a cloth store in Kasganj.

Stray incidents of violence were reported from the western Uttar Pradesh town which continued to be tense with heavy deployment of RAF and PAC personnel to keep a check on rumour mongers and trouble makers.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Sadar, Devendra Pratap Singh informed that so far 38 persons arrested for violating prohibitory orders have been granted bail. Meanwhile, district authorities have banned the entry of any political leader in Kasganj and hence, the two delegations, one of the Congress and another of the Rastriya Lok Dal, have been denied permission.

The government conveyed to the Home Ministry that the police were investigating the case and all facts are being ascertained to know if the violence was pre-planned.

At least three shops, two buses and a vehicle were torched after Chandan was killed in clashes between two communities that broke out when VHP and ABVP volunteers, carrying the tricolour and saffron flag, insisted that Muslims, who had gathered for flag hoisting in the Muslim-dominated locality of Baddu Nagar, give them way for their motorcycle rally.

The UP Police said drone cameras had been deployed for aerial surveillance and described the situation as improving. "They need to be dealt with strictly".
