At least 36 people have been killed and 185 wounded due to the violence in Aden since Sunday, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The forces of the so-called Southern Transitional Council (STC) seized the headquarters of the Presidential Protection forces in the Dar Saad area of northern Aden, local sources told newsmen.

In a post on Twitter, Mukhtar al-Rahbi, an official in Yemen's government, said: "A plane from the Arab coalition, that said it had come to support legitimacy (Yemen's internationally recognised government) bombed the base of the Fourth Brigade".

Fighting between southern separatists allied to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi forces loyal to the president Hadi risk crippling their once united campaign against the Iran-aligned Houthi movement in Yemen's north.

"We call on all parties to refrain from escalation and further bloodshed". Hadi has remained there while his government operates out of Aden.

The Saudi-led coalition, which intervened in Yemen's civil war in 2015 to restore Hadi's government after the Houthis forced him into exile, called in a statement on Tuesday on both parties to cease hostilities.

Prime Minister Ahmed bin Dahar and several ministers were expected to flee to neighboring Saudi Arabia following the latest action, but it was unclear if they had done so.

The fighting in Aden first erupted on Sunday, when a deadline issued by the separatists for the government to resign expired.

The lack of any progress on political negotiations, Mr. Dujarric said, "only piles onto the misery of the Yemeni people".

The cabinet also stressed the need to finish the liberation of all Yemeni territories, defeat Iran's Houthi militias, and avoid any reasons that may lead to division and undermining the State's institutions in Yemen.

Tensions have recently started to spike between southern separatists and the government of Hadi over the control of the southern half of Yemen.

Hadi, who is based in Saudi Arabia, renewed his call for a cease-fire, saying "rebellion and weapons won't achieve peace or build a state".

The militants established the transitional "council of Southern Aden" last May.
