Trump to announce his plan to keep Guantanamo Bay open during first State of the Union address

Moments before delivering the State of the Union address, President Trump signed an executive order Tuesday to keep open one of the government's most criticized facilities: The military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. "And when captured overseas, they should be treated like the terrorists they are", Trump said.

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to keep Guantánamo Bay military prison open in a major reversal of his predecessor Barack Obama's policy.

Trump asserted that the USA maintains the option to detain additional enemy combatants at the facility when necessary, according to the summary of the order.

While hundreds of detainees have been transferred from the facility, 41 detainees now remain.

President George W. Bush opened Guantanamo after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks to hold and interrogate suspected enemy combatants.

In his speech, Trump said that the United States "foolishly" released hundreds of terrorists, including the leader of Daesh terrorist group. It reportedly holds 41 detainees.

Lionel Messi scored a superb free-kick to save Barcelona's unbeaten league record, beating Alaves 2-1 on Sunday evening. He got on the ball, he was asking for it, he was involved in the play, wide and through the middle.

The Center for Constitutional Rights, which has been involved in lawsuits against Gitmo since it opened, said in a statement that the new order is "unsurprising given Trump's deep-seated racism, his well-documented antipathy toward all Muslims, and his endless puffing and posturing".

During his presidential campaign, Trump vowed to "load (Guantanamo Bay) up with some bad dudes".

"But as a symbolic matter, it changes a great deal because the two presidents before him were trying to close Guantanamo because they recognized that it was a detriment to our national security", he said.

"In the past, we have foolishly released hundreds of unsafe terrorists only to meet them again on the battlefield", he added, giving the IS group's leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as an example.

The facility has always been criticized for the mistreatment and abuse of detainees, prompting many to call on the United States authorities to close the facility.
