Airlines Cancel More Than 200 Flights Over Tensions Between China and Taiwan

Taiwan protests China's new air routes over Strait

The airlines said in separate statements they had no choice but to cancel the trips after what they said was a refusal by Taiwanese authorities to approve the flights.

Two Chinese airlines have scrapped flights between China and Taiwan, amid a row between Beijing and Taipei over access to air routes.

This month, China opened several new air routes, including a north-bound route up the Taiwan Strait. The schedule for the flights was in addition to Taiwan's regular airline services which were created to deal with the high demand of air travel especially during the Lunar New Year holiday which is due to start on February.

In a statement released yesterday, Taiwan's presidential office said protecting the safety of all its people flying across the strait was "a responsibility that can not be abandoned".

Taiwan, though, has objected to a new route known as M503, which it says passes dangerously close to existing airports on the Tiaoyutai Islands. The authorities said the routes would be used only for civilian flights.

In addition, under the "National AYUSH Mission", traditional methods of treatment, such as Yoga and Ayurveda are being promoted. Kovind stressed that his government was committed to "empowerment and not appeasement" of minorities.

The government slammed the move as reckless and politically motivated, adding it could threaten Taiwan's security and endanger flight safety.

President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) last month warned against what she called Beijing's "military expansion" - the increase in Chinese air and naval drills around Taiwan since she came to power in May 2016.

China Eastern said earlier Tuesday that its decision to cancel 106 extra flights would affect 40,000 potential passengers, many of them Taiwanese business people wanting to spend the holidays at home. Moreover, of 70 flights had been cancelled by Xiamen Airlines which blamed Taiwan for the hitch and labelling them as heartless. Then direct flights were permitted, and they continue across the Taiwan Straits today.

Taiwanese who want to be home for the holidays will probably have to find other options. As a result, the Taiwanese government withheld approval of route applications from the Chinese airlines.

Kinmen and Matsu have both been under Taiwan's control since defeated Nationalist forces fled to Taiwan at the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949.
