Intel Warned Chinese Companies of Chip Flaws Before US Government

At the start of January, Microsoft released a patch to plug the Meltdown and Spectre CPU flaws that can cause kernel data to be leaked by applications. The out-of-band update, KB4078130, is meant for (SP1), and.

While year-end financial results released last week show Intel enjoyed record earnings in 2017, the company could yet see long-term fallout from the Spectre and Meltdown hardware bugs.

This means that the issues the Intel patch caused were deemed more serious than the security vulnerabilities it was created to fix - at least in the short term.

Update KB4078130 was delivered in haste to reverse the system instability that Intel's Spectre variant 2 (CVE 2017-5715 Branch Target Injection) could cause. This is being fixed but in the meantime, Microsoft has pushed out its own Windows patch that disables Intel's prior buggy fix. Intel noted that in some situations this reboot could case data loss or corruption.

Upon announcing its patches on Friday and Saturday, Microsoft said affected customers will also need to deploy processor microcode, or firmware, updates through their device manufacturers.

After chipmaker Intel a potential security flaw in its chips, Microsoft issued emergency updates to supported versions of Windows earlier this month. "There are no known reports to indicate that this Spectre variant 2 (CVE 2017-5715) has been used to attack customers, a Microsoft said". In order to download the patch, you can visit the Microsoft Update Catalog website.

Spectre and Meltdown are vulnerabilities in modern chip design that could allow attackers to bypass system protections on almost every recent PC, server and smartphone-allowing hackers to read sensitive information, such as passwords, from memory. "I apologize for any disruption this change in guidance may cause", said Navin Shenoy, an Intel executive vice president who leads the company's Data Center Group, in that note. (That's the type of vulnerability that applies to Spectre and Meltdown.) That's KB4073119, and it outlines PowerShell scripts to check vulnerability protections, and registry tweaks to enable or disable them. Avoiding data loss or corruption is a priority, and with the Intel "fix", they are both a real possibility. Intel's still not published a timeframe for when its functioning microcode update will be issued to hardware vendors.
