Chris Wray put pressure on McCabe to quit

McCabe is stepping down effective Monday

Fox News' Jake Gibson reported that McCabe was "removed" from his position while CNN's Jim Acosta reported that a source close to McCabe said that he was pushed out by FBI Director Christopher Wray, who wants to put his own team into FBI leadership.

McCabe was expected to resign in March when he was eligible for retirement and full benefits.

McCabe, slated to step down in March, has been said to be using accumulated leave.

Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders pushed back against suggestions that President Trump had anything to do with McCabe's ouster.

Trump has been publicly pressuring McCabe for months and has claimed that McCabe has an anti-Trump bias.

McCabe in particular has become a main target of those critics, who have accused the bureau of being too favorable toward Hillary Clinton in its investigation of her use of a personal email server while secretary of state.

Gunman kills four at Pennsylvania car wash
State police confirm five people are dead after a shooting early Sunday morning in Melcroft, Fayette County. State police say three men and two women have been found dead in a shooting at a Pennsylvania vehicle wash.

McCabe, who will stay on the Federal Bureau of Investigation payroll through March so he can get his pension, made a decision to resign when news of the potential demotion reached him, sources said.

The removal may also have come by order of the Inspector General who is now investigating the Department of Justice and FBI over the handling of Hillary Clinton's email server investigation.

Trump targeted McCabe with critical tweets after it emerged that his wife had received a campaign contribution for a race in Virginia in 2015 from an ally of Trump rival Hillary Clinton. Trump also reportedly berated McCabe over the political donations his wife received from McAuliffe.

FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe is stepping down. The White House on Monday said Trump "stands by his previous comments" about McCabe, but he "wasn't part of this decision-making process", Sanders said. And, a month after Trump fired Comey, he also ordered the firing of special counsel Robert Mueller - although the White House counsel Don McGahn refused to follow through on that directive.

Michael Flynn, then the National Security adviser gave a false story about his calls with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the transition.
