Member Of German Nationalist Anti-Islamization Party Resigns After Converting To Islam

The far-right, anti-Islam Alternative for Germany (AfD) party confirmed reports in the German media that one of its politicians, Arthur Wagner, has converted to Islam. It appears he had only recently converted to Islam, and he resigned from his position on January 11 for "private reasons".

Kalbitz told CNN that while "lots of Muslims in Germany are well integrated, Islam itself is not part of German culture", a point he reiterated in a Facebook post Wednesday.

Kalbitz said there was "no pressure from the party" for Wagner to resign.

Arthur Wagner, who has sat on AfD's state legislative committee in Brandenburg, told German daily newspaper Der Tagesspiegel his conversion was a private matter.

"Religion is a private issue". Days later, in a telephone conversation with the state's party leader Andreas Kalbitz, Wagner revealed he had converted and was now a Muslim. "Islam does not belong to Germany", one of its popular slogans read.

Mr Adams also said a united Ireland was not a "pipe dream", adding: "It is very achievable - we can do it". He described politics in Northern Ireland as "very polarised and very toxic".

In the Brandenburg state committee, he was responsible for churches and religious communities.

He recently stepped down from his role for what he claims are unrelated reasons, although he remains a member of the party.

The AfD, perhaps trying to dismiss the magnitude of Wagner's departure, wrote in a blog post on its official website that his conversion isn't inconsistent with the party's values.

The party has also sought to ban the construction of mosques in Germany. But as other possibilities for a deal with non-AfD parties in parliament have been unsuccessful, the Social Democratic Party has voted to begin coalition talks again. It has strongly criticised the German Government's decision to allow more than a million refugees into Germany in 2015.

Wagner did not respond to multiple requests for comment from CNN. Some of the ads had a picture of a pig with the caption, "Islam?"
