When deputies arrived, they learned the assault suspect had left and they began a search for him.

An Adams County Sheriff's Deputy has been shot and police have set up a large perimeter as they search for the shooter, according to our sister station KCNC in Denver. There was a foot chase, and during the chase the suspect started shooting at deputies.

"This loss is incomprehensible", the Arapahoe Sheriff's office tweeted.

Dreion Dearing, 22, was arrested overnight following the shooting, which took place near East 88th Avenue and Washington Street in the Thornton area. Governor John Hickenlooper ordered all flags to to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Deputy Gumm.

Gumm is the second Colorado law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty in the past month.

They say Denver Cass Simmons is now wanted in Harrison County for numerous alleged offenses including burglary, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and multiple thefts.
