The prime accused in the high-profile rape and murder case of eight-year-old Zainab in Pakistan on Wednesday was sent on a 14-day remand by an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore, Express Tribune reported.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Tuesday formally announced the arrest of 23-year-old Imran Ali.

During today’s proceedings, accused Imran confessed to rape and murder of minor girl Zainab.

"We have arrested this horrific creature", Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif said at a press conference Tuesday.The alleged killer's first victim was found dead in Kasur two years ago.

Five days later, her body was recovered from a garbage heap on January 9.

Kasur was previously at the center of a child sexual abuse scandal in which a gang of over two dozen men was accused of blackmailing scores of children into making sex videos between 2009 and 2014. He was apprehended after DNA samples picked from the girl's body matched his.

On the special invitation and arrangements of the committee, the aggrieved parents of Zainab had also attended the meeting. Report from PFSA confirmed that Imran's DNA sample matched with the traces that were collected from Zainab's body.

Zainab was raped and murdered after abducted on January 4.

According to police sources, the suspect arrested earlier in the day was a resident of the same area where Zainab's house was located, and lived very close to the victim's aunt's house.

A spokesperson for the Punjab government said the suspect was arrested from Pakpattan.

He informed that Zainab's rape and murder was the eighth incident of similar nature that had taken place in Kasur since June 2015. I beg everyone that such fragile, sensitive, heart breaking stories shouldn't be politicized."When asked about the accusations that police failed to act on previous attacks on girls in Kasur, Sharif said: "I agree that there should be accountability for the previous seven girls who were attacked by this serial killer and rapist".

After her abduction, a CCTV footage showed her walking with a stranger near Peerowala Road.
