The lawsuit alleges the opioid epidemic was caused by manufacturers' marketing and by distributors sending prescription painkillers into New York City.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said opioids killed more people in the city in recent years than vehicle crashes and homicides.

The city is claiming that opioid manufacturers have burdened the health and finances of New York's government by employing deceptive marketing to sell inordinate amounts of risky and addictive drugs to citizens.

'More New Yorkers have died from opioid overdoses than vehicle crashes and homicides combined in recent years, ' the Mayor said in a statement, blaming Big Pharma for fueling the epidemic.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced he would not attend Wednesday's meeting of mayors at the White House.

De Blasio is not the only mayor who backed out of the meeting. "And this just proves, once again, that they're not trying to work with American cities", de Blasio said.

New York City is one of many major metro areas that are taking opioid drug companies to court.

De Blasio previously met with Trump just over a week after the 2016 election to talk with the then-president-elect about "the concerns and the needs of all New Yorkers", saying that many "were fearful".

The opioid crisis was caused by the deceptive marketing of drugmakers, and by distributors bringing large amounts of prescription painkillers into the NY market, according to the complaint. Montana and Washington as well as some smaller city governments have also filed legal complaints against OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma.

New York City said in its press release that roughly 2.5 million to 2.7 million opioid prescriptions were filled each year from 2014 to 2016.

The city has been slow to respond to the crisis, and previous year Blasio announced a plan to reduce opioid deaths through a combination of outreach, treatment and law enforcement. People in need of treatment and their families need support now, ' he said.
