Electric supercar? 'Ferrari will be the first'

Ferrari Boss Promises SUV Will Drive And Look Like A Ferrari

Ferrari plans to make a high-end electric vehicle, said CEO Sergio Marchionne on Tuesday.

"People are amazed at what Tesla did with a supercar: I'm not trying to minimize what Elon did but I think it's doable by all of us", Marchionne said at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Tesla's new Roadster is going to be an incredible bit of machinery able to hit 60mph in 1.9-seconds.

This is the first indication from the legendary Italian manufacturer of its plans to build an electric supercar, though in 2016 Marchionne did state that it's the company's vision to have hybrid models of every Ferrari vehicle by 2019.

Sergio Marchionne thinks it's possible Ferrari has put together a "monster" of a formula one auto for 2018.

International Monetary Fund cuts South Africa's growth forecast for next two years
Current upswing in the global economy "furnishes an ideal moment to act on a range of multilateral challenges", Obstfeld said. This growth is expected to continue into 2018 and 2019, as global growth is revised up to 3.9 percent for these two years.

The plan would be a significant change of direction for Marchionne and Ferrari. In order to develop the EV, Ferrari will begin with more hybrid models to make the switch to full electrification easier.

Mr. Marchionne did not deny rumors that he has big plans in F1 for Alfa Romeo, as the Italian brand becomes Sauber's title sponsor this year. This self-imposed limit permitted the brand to operate under slightly relaxed fuel economy rules. The goals include doubling operating profit to about 2 billion euros ($2.35 billion) by 2022, the people said then.

The man has always been a sceptic of alternative powertrains but said in an interview before the Detroit Motor Show that, by 2025, fewer than half of cars sold will be purely combustion powered as petrol and diesel make way for hybrid, electric and fuel-cell powertrains.

But Marchionne now believes that automakers have about 10 years to reinvent themselves to meet the changing consumer mindsets on how vehicles are purchased, driven, and powered.
