The national average price for a gallon of gas is $2.54, which is more expensive than one year ago.

Federal data show the average retail price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $2.42 previous year and should be about 15 cents per gallon higher for all of 2018.

"It has been anything but a normal January for prices at the pump", said Mark Jenkins, AAA spokesman, in a press release. However, that's just not the case this year.

AAA reports the largest increases in gasoline price were 39 cents in California, 37 cents in IN and plus 32 cents in MI. The EIA forecasts that crude oil production will average 10.3 million barrels per day in 2018, which would mark the highest annual average production rate in US history, surpassing the previous record of 9.6 million barrels per day set in 1970.
