President Ram Nath Kovind stamps disqualification of 20 AAP MLAs

The AAP MLAs, who have been disqualified as members of legislative assembly for holding office of profit, have withdrawn their pleas from Delhi high court challenging the Election Commission's recommendation which got the assent of the president.

The Election Commission had recommended on Friday that the legislators be disqualified for drawing salaries for government jobs outside their elected duties.

The application by Patel said 21 AAP MLAs, including Jarnail Singh (Rajouri Garden) who resigned to contest the Punjab Assembly polls a year ago, were appointed Parliamentary Secretaries to Ministers in the Delhi government in violation of the law and Constitution.

Even President Ram Nath Kovind took cognisance and stamped his approval to the Election Commission of India (ECI)'s recommendations, the Sena said in a strong edit in the party mouthpieces, 'Saamana' and 'Dopahar Ka Saamana'.

The Aam Aadmi Party has chose to approach Delhi High Court to seek an interim injunction against the President's order. AAP MLAs were appointed parliamentary secretaries and this was described by petitioner Prashant Patel as them holding offices of profit.

It pointed to the ongoing war between the Delhi chief minister and Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, in which the latter doesn't miss "a single opportunity" to create obstacles for Kejriwal and the AAP government. Lamba is one of the 20 AAP MLAs who have been disqualified from the Delhi Assembly. Is it right to push Delhi to polls like this?

United Kingdom could join reconfigured European Union in future - minister
EU President Donald Tusk began the charm offensive, saying that the bloc's "hearts are open" to Britain changing its mind. Jeremy Hunt, the health secretary, said that the EU's "disappointing" and "arrogant" behaviour had turned...

"The parliamentary secretaries are still enjoying perks in the form of bungalows, cars and other facilities like ministers", he alleged. But legally they appear to be in the clear, as this particular designation has been kept outside the purview of office of profit in these states.

They include transport minister Kailash Gahlot.

"I had given responsibility of various works to these 20 MLAs".

In the 90-member House, the BJP has 49 MLAs, followed by the Congress (39), Independent (1) and BSP (1).

AAP while making it clear that the party was taking legal recourse has already reacted very sharply against the "haste" in which the President acted on the EC's decision, terming it as "unconstitutional" and "dangerous for democracy". The AAP MLAs had also sought time from the president.

At a gathering in Najafgarh, he said, "They are trying to harass us by all means..." "Till date 15 MLAs have been sent to jail under various cases at Modi's instructions because he has not been able to digest the resounding defeat in Delhi assembly elections", the AAP spokesperson said.
