South Korea's Unification Ministry said on Saturday that the sudden cancellation of a North Korean delegation's planned visit to the South to prepare for the North's art troupe during the Winter Olympics was "not a permanent cancellation".

Sports ministers from both countries held a meeting at the International Olympic Committee headquarters in Switzerland on Saturday.

It's official: Athletes from North Korea will compete in the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Korean athletes from both states had already marched under the same "unification" flag - a light-blue silhouette of the peninsula on a white background - during the opening ceremonies for the Sidney 2000 and Athens 2004 Summer Olympics.

With some North Korean athletes missing registration deadlines, the International Olympic Committee has granted them special permission to allow them to compete.

Could North and South Korea finally join forces - on the ice hockey rink?

The women's ice hockey team will include 12 players and one official from North Korea alongside 23 South Korean players.

The unified women's ice hockey team will comprise 35 players, but only 22 of them can actually compete in the games as rosters are set at 22.

An additional berth in the pairs figure skating was made for North Korea's Ryom Tae Ok and Kim Ju Sik.

The Olympic torch has embarked on a weeklong journey along the Demilitarized Zone dividing North and South Korea - one of the most unsafe borders in the world - with hope that both sides will rise above their differences to make greater peace a reality.

Chun, the South's lead delegate, said the decision on a united ice hockey team is not yet finalized, as it requires the consent of the IOC and related worldwide body.

He went on to say: "The Olympic Games show us what the world could look like, if we were all guided by the Olympic spirit of respect and understanding".

The games will run from February 9-25.

North Korea's participation in the Olympics has been seen as a win for South Korea president Moon Jae-in, who hopes to use the event to make a diplomatic breakthrough in the standoff over North Korea's nuclear and missile program.
