CJI Dipak Misra meets the four senior-most SC judges

The stunning press conference and the charge that senior judges were being discriminated against, which initially evoked disbelief and was frowned upon by judges, has served as a catalyst for the CJI to fast-track a process of introduction of reforms in administration of the apex court, mainly to devise a mechanism for transparent assignment of cases to benches.

Besides the CJI, justices AM Khanwilkar DY Chandrachud will be on the bench, according to the list of business released by the Supreme Court registry on Saturday.

On Friday last, the four rebels, in an unprecedented move in the annals of the Indian judiciary, had questioned the "unilateral and biased" decisions of Chief justice Dipak Misra in the allocation of "important" cases to junior judges.

The SC bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra on January 17 recused itself from hearing the matter after the bench directed that all the documents furnished by the Maharashtra government to the court relating to the death of Judge Loya be shared with the petitioners seeking independent probe.

A meeting of the commission presided over by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar also recommended the appointment of senior puisne judge Justice Muhammad Yawar Ali as LHC chief justice. Lone's advocate Anita Shenoy said she went to the CJI's court to apprise him about the last order in the case and seek a date for hearing.

Justice Loya, at the time of his death in December 2014, was hearing the politically-sensitive Sohrabuddin Sheikh police encounter case.

In the SC a roster system is followed to mark cases to benches that sit in the combination of two judges.

The JC meeting also discussed a longstanding demand of lawyers' representative bodies for amendments to the Judicial Commission Rules 2010 to make the nomination process more transparent with the active participation of the PBC.

Posting this case before Justice Arun Mishra's bench was apparently the trigger that had led the four senior-most judges to come out openly against the Chief Justice of India.

Sources said that some progress was made yesterday amid indications that further talks are likely to take place on Monday as the CJI assured the four dissenting judges that he will consider the issues and suggestions raised by them on various matters.
