It's the latest social media challenge that comes with some unsafe risks: People recording themselves eating Tide laundry pods after social media memes compared the cleaning product to food.

If you thought the ice bucket or cinnamon challenges were silly, the Tide Pod challenge might just top your list of stupid internet crazes.

"We are deeply concerned about conversations related to intentional and improper use of liquid laundry pacs, and have been working with leading social media networks to remove harmful content that is not consistent with their policies", a spokesperson told Time.

In a statement, the video-streaming service said its community guidelines prohibit content that encourages risky activities that have a risk of causing physical harm.

"It's a gateway back to real food for kids doing the Tide Pods challenge", Roesthley said.

The company hired National Football League star Rob Gronkowski to film a clip that will call on teenagers to stop eating Tide Pods.

In Waynesboro, assistant high school principal Rita Sterner-Hine recommended that parents monitor their children's social media use and warn them of the dangers of consuming laundry detergent pods.

YouTube has confirmed it is removing videos showing the challenge.

The "Tide pod challenge" as its called is the latest viral trend and its resulted in more than 40 hospitalizations in Canada and the USA this month alone.

Tide is not widely available in Australia but the product in the challenge is similar to others available on Australian supermarket shelves.

Eating detergent packets can bring about an assortment of health complications, both minor and severe. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a warning to parents several years ago about the liquid laundry detergent packets.

Now most of the calls involve 13- to 19-year-olds.

"What we would see is oral burns, airway burns, possible aspiration into your lungs, burning of the lungs, and like I said, worst-case scenario: potentially death", said Dr. Jonathan Skelton, emergency medicine doctor.
