Facebook says it will start sorting news sources by how "trustworthy" its users think they are - a major change as the social media giant continues to come under fire over the spread of misinformation on its platform.

Spokesman Todd Breasseale says in an email: "As part of our ongoing quality surveys, we asked a diverse and representative sample of Facebook users across the USA to gauge their familiarity with, and trust in, sources of news". Posts shared by media outlets may appear more or less frequently in people's News Feeds depending on how trustworthy Facebook's users perceive those outlets to be.

Facebook's January 11 announcement about the changes it's making to the News Feed explained that "showing more posts from friends and family and updates that spark conversation means we'll show less public content, including videos and other posts from publishers or businesses".

"There's too much sensationalism, misinformation and polarization in the world today". Facebook has dealt with controversies in the past when conservative news sources have alleged unfair treatment, and the company claims this new system will put the power in users' hands. Trump appropriated the term soon after by using it on his critics in the media, but Facebook has remained under scrutiny for how users can be exposed to news and news-related content, a portion of which was apparently produced with help from Russians trying to influence the election.

The US announcement on UNRWA's funding came after US President Donald Trump had threatened on January 2 to cut aid to Palestinians.

News outlets quickly began reporting a loss in website traffic after the change and now the same outlets are suggesting the change actually helped promote fake news rather than fight it. A source's broad trust is one of many signals that determine stories' ranking in News Feed. "We could try to make that decision ourselves, but that's not something we're comfortable with", the Facebook chairman said.

As a result of the changes, people can expect the level of news in the News Feed to drop from the current 5 percent to 4 percent, Zuckerberg said.

"We decided that having the community determine which sources are broadly trusted would be most objective".
