DACA Troubles Could Put Spending Bill In Peril

Trump accuses Democrats of being all-talk, no-action on DACA fix

Trump accuses Democrats of being all-talk, no-action on DACA fix

Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said Wednesday that he won't support another short-term spending bill, meaning that Republicans will need at least 10 Democratic votes for the funding bill to pass in the Senate.

"With little hope of an immigration agreement this week, Republicans in Congress are looking to head off a government shutdown this weekend by pairing another stopgap spending measure with long-term funding for the popular Children's Health Insurance Program, daring Democrats to vote no".

That will put pressure on House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, R-Wis., to again muster enough votes from his majority to pass a bill without support from Democrats.

While longer-term spending negotiations were still ongoing, Democrats have dug in their heels and demanded that no spending caps be agreed to until there is a deal on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which expires on March 5. "KICK THE CAN" No. 2 House Democrat Steny Hoyer said Democrats have not decided whether they will support another continuing resolution and "can kick the can down the road one more time".

Today's report that White House chief of staff John Kelly may be undercutting the president's position in talks with congressional Democrats is not likely to put POTUS in a conciliatory mood on the subject.

"We've been working at this for four months, seriously working at it", Durbin said. That bill could already have been passed and signed by now if you hadn't done that.

The legislation would further limit so-called family chain-migration by allowing immigrants who receive permanent legal residency to only sponsor nuclear family members, including spouses and unmarried children younger than 21, to come to the U.S. This would also represent a significant shift from the current system, which allows legal permanent residents to also sponsor additional family members, including parents and siblings.

Arthur says President Trump gets to determine just how the shutdown takes place and should inflict the "maximum amount of pain" on Democrats' constituents just as his predecessor in the White House did.

The House is on track to pass a one-month government spending bill on Thursday, forcing Senate Democrats to decide whether or not to block the measure in a risky bid to gain leverage on immigration.

Lopez-Ramos then hired Alexis Ramos-Rivera and Glorianmarie Quinones Montes to carry out the murder, the station reported. The body of Janice Marie Zengotita-Torres was found in Ormond Beach Monday, Jan. 8 after she was reported missing.

"There is now not enough support for the latest leadership initiative", congressman Mark Meadows, chairman of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, told The Hill on Tuesday.

The stopgap spending bill would be the fourth measure of its kind since September.

She also said she didn't recall Trump saying, "I want more Europeans", including immigrants from Norway.

House GOP leaders are cautiously optimistic they can muster the votes for their short-term funding bill released Tuesday night. The bill would leave in limbo hundreds of thousands of young immigrants brought to the country illegally as children.

"I am undocumented, I am a DACA holder, and each day that passes by a lot of young undocumented lose their DACA and are put at risk", said a 23-year-old college student who identified herself as Dennise, one of those arrested in NY.

Outside groups have urged Democrats to vote against any legislation until the matter is addressed, and some progressives are itching for a shutdown fight that forces Republicans to deal on immigration. "I think we owe it to them and we owe it to the American people and to our ideals to find a solution".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell signaled he wants to get a stopgap funding bill settled and leave more hard negotiations for later.

Last week, a federal court decision temporarily blocked President Donald Trump's decision to end DACA and said the government must resume the program's renewal application. We believe strongly in immigration reform.

Trump wrote on Twitter that if the government were shut down over amnesty and border security, the military would be the biggest loser. Democrats have threatened to withhold their votes because of the stalemate over immigration - a potential obstacle in the Senate, where 60 votes are needed.
