Rohingya refugees to return in 2 years

Bangladesh Is Sending Rohingya Back To Myanmar — That's Not Good

Bangladesh and Myanmar have agreed on a two-year timeline for the repatriation of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya amid worldwide community's concern over the repatriation climate and the safety of the returnees.

According to the Myanmar government, returnees will be held at two so-called reception centers - Taung Pyo Letwe and Nga Khu Ya - for one or two days to verify their identity.

On the other hand, Myanmar would shelter the Rohingyas in a temporary accommodation for now at Hla Pho Khung and re-build new houses in Rakhine State for them.

The Bangladesh foreign ministry statement said Myanmar would consider resettling the people staying at the zero line on a priority basis.

"We had proposed to repatriate 15,000 Rohingyas every week but they [Myanmar] did not agree to it", Bangladesh Ambassador to Myanmar Sufiur Rahman said. Modalities for repatriation of orphans and children born out of unwarranted incidence have also been incorporated in the arrangement.

Naypyitaw also reaffirmed its commitment to stop the influx of refugees from Myanmar to Bangladesh.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam told bdnews24.com that the return would be in "voluntary, dignified and safe" manner, dispelling concerns by United Nations refugee bodies and rights organisations.

A top Myanmar official said Monday that a camp to host the Rohingya will be ready by next week. Bangladesh fears that the overflowing refugee camps on its side of the border will become permanent settlements.

Displaced Rohingya now held in vast refugee camps in Bangladesh have expressed extreme reluctance to return.

Rohingya freedom of movement must be lifted, and the 160,000 Rohingya internally displaced now housed in poor conditions in camps inside Myanmar must also be allowed home.

The crisis erupted on August 25 when the Myanmar Army launched an operation in western Myanmar's Rakhine state - where around 1 million Rohingyas were living - in retaliation for an attack by a Rohingya insurgent group on multiple government posts.

Abd-us-Salam, who is more than 100 years old, has fled three military crackdowns in Myanmar.

The UN has called the violence against civilians in Myanmar a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing". Apart from the fact that at this rate repatriation can take around a decade to complete, Myanmar's army - which has control over Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Border Affairs - still seems unwilling to clear a path to citizenship and political inclusion for the people of Rohingya.

The ongoing crisis has been described as the biggest forced exodus of 2017.
