Google could be heading for speaker-less future

According to Bloomberg, the worldwide tech firm quietly acquired the Cambridge-based startup, whose proprietary technology creates surfaces which transform phone displays into speakers.

The acquisition is reflected on Crunchbase, and in confirmed transfer of shares within United Kingdom regulatory filings. One obvious benefit there is the fact that this would allow manufacturers to remove speaker modules and free up space for other components, like bigger batteries.

Google has declined to comment on the acquisition, including how much might have been paid for Redux.

Redux isn't the only company looking to transform screens into speakers.

Along with this, Redux can also use these vibrations to create haptic feedback when interacting with a display that tries to mimic the feel of touching buttons and moving sliders/dials. On Ivanov's profile page, it says that Redux achieved a "successful exit" in August 2017, but it does not state the buyer.

Alligators survive freezing waters by poking noses through ice
The park later posted an update video on January 9 to show the alligators swimming around after the ice had thawed. They'll stick their nose above the surface at just the right moment and allow the water to freeze around it.

So far, Redux has only been able to integrate its technologies inside PCs and some infotainment systems for vehicles, but none have made its way to commercially available mobile devices yet. For instance, the iPhone X and a couple of other bezel-less smartphones like the Mi Mix have strategically relocated hardware like the mic and the earpiece in order to accommodate the larger display.

Alphabet has a range of potential uses for the technology.

At CES 2018, Google mainly focused on promoting its smart speakers and its new line of Smart Display devices, its direct competitor to the Amazon Echo Show.

Redux developed a number of technologies involving sound and touch in mobile devices, but never placed them in any major consumer products.

In the past, the company has demoed its technology on smartphone and tablet displays, and that very well may be Google's core intended use for this exciting technology.
