Alligators survive freezing waters by poking noses through ice

The Shallotte River Swamp Park in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina posted an incredible video showing their rescued American Alligators.

In the video, an alligator is seen sticking its snout out of a frozen swamp. They can live in water as cold as 40 degrees. They'll stick their nose above the surface at just the right moment and allow the water to freeze around it.

The park later posted an update video on January 9 to show the alligators swimming around after the ice had thawed.

Alligators can hold their breath for up to 24 hours, according to the Swamp Park.

The rescued alligators are fine - they're cold-blooded and can regulate their own body temperature.

"This is where a reptile's metabolism slows down dramatically and will go into a lethargic state", experts say in the blog.

Wintry weather expected late Sunday
Precipitation Sunday evening, says NWS, "may begin as a wintry mix of sleet and snow, mainly east of I-65". Any ice accumulations are expected to be relatively light, averaging less than a tenth of an inch.

"(It's) just an absolute fantastic survival technique and these guys were built tough millions of years ago and they remain tough today", Howard said.

You don't have to wonder any longer thanks to the folks at the Shallotte River Swamp Park in Brunswick County.

"It's a survival mechanism", George Howard, the general manager of the park, told local reporters on Tuesday, "They'll go wherever it is warmest".

"Obviously, that is not optimal, being frozen like that", he said. "They are trying to conserve energy to maintain body temperature".

However, two alligators were run over by vehicles near Charlotte this past summer, and both died.
