Why Packers' Reported GM Hire Is Good News For Bill Belichick, Patriots

Report: Philbin returning to Packers staff

Report: Philbin returning to Packers staff

The Green Bay Packers completed their general manager search Sunday with an internal hire, promoting director of player personnel Brian Gutekunst to GM on a five-year contract, NFL Media's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported.

Gutekunst spent the last two seasons as the director of player personnel after spending 17 seasons in the team's scouting department. Gutekunst was in the running to replace Ted Thompson in Green Bay, so it can not be ruled out that he will be promoted to general manager.

This comes after the 43-year-old Gutekunst interviewed for the Houston Texans' vacant GM job. He spent his first 13 seasons as a college scout.

That's good news for Mike McCarthy, who reportedly isn't in good graces with Ball and could've been out as the Packers' head coach if Ball was named GM.

Police told news agency TT that the killed man, who was in his 60s, and the injured woman, who is in her 40s, were a couple. They added that there were no indications that the incident was related to terror.

Green Bay reached out to Seattle, according to reports, and requested an interview with Schneider, but were denied the opportunity by the Seahawks. He could join former Senior Personnel Analyst Alonzo Highsmith who joined John Dorsey's scouting staff in Cleveland last week.

Instead the Packers were forced to focus on in-house candidates, which meant they were going to focus on Gutekunst, Russ Ball and Eliot Wolf.

McCarthy is also filling several assistant coaching vacancies, including both the offensive and defensive coordinator positions.
