Iran criticises US 'blunder' over UN meeting

"The people of Iran are rising up".

State television showed rallies in cities including Amol, Semnan and Shadegan waving Iranian flags and chanting "Death to America", "Death to Israel" and "Death to Britain".

However, the Russian representative Vassily A Nebenzia agreed with Iran and said United States is abusing the platform of the Security Council.

This could all change if the mass demonstration in the country continues and the Iranian authorities resort to clearly systematic, oppressive and brutal methods to deal with them.

Joining Iran, Russia and China, the French Representative to the UN, Francois Delattre it is up to the Iranians alone to pursue the path of peace.

The widespread demonstrations were initially triggered by the worsening economic situation in the country but soon touched upon other issues relevant to the level of democracy and respect for human rights in the country.

Durting the meeting, three members France, Russia and China of the permanent five, joined Iran in asserting that this 15-membered body was not an appropriate forum to discuss the current situation in Iran as it does not pose any threat to worldwide peace and security.

"It is right and proper - indeed, our responsibility.to assess whether a situation like this could become a threat to global peace and security", British Ambassador Matthew Rycroft said before the meeting.

Protesters in Germany called on the German government and the global community to condemn what they called "mass killings" on the streets of Iran. The country has increasingly has blamed its foreign foes for fomenting the unrest. We will not be quiet.

"However worrying the events of the last few days in Iran may be, they do not constitute per se a threat to global peace and security", Ambassador Francois Delattre said.

However, France's United Nations ambassador Francois Delattre argued that the protests don't threaten worldwide peace and security, saying: "We must be wary of any attempts to exploit this crisis for personal ends".

"It's another attempt [at bullying] by the US, which has lost authority and credibility in the eyes of the whole world", said Khoshroo.

Khoshoroo alleged that the U.S. has a long history of intervening in the internal affairs of Iran, including a continuous pattern of disruption in the democratisation process in Iran.

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted: "The UNSC rebuffed the U.S.'s naked attempt to hijack its mandate".

Iran's interior minister said up to 42,000 people took part during the week of protests.

Mr Khoshroo claimed the protests had received "direct encouragement by foreign forces including by the president of the United States", something the Trump administration has denied. The days of pro-government rallies drew crowds in the tens of thousands.
