The man is also said to have pulled off his shirt and attempted to flush it mid-flight.

The plane was grounded overnight for maintenance, which meant the passengers were stranded for the night in Anchorage.

Passenger Tri Nquyen sat next to the man, a family friend who offered to ensure his safe arrival in Vietnam.

A United passenger befouled the bathrooms so badly the plane had to land

According to airport police, the alleged bathroom-destroyer cooperated with United Airlines staff and was escorted into police custody. The cleaning process, however, forced each of the flight's passengers to spend the night in Alaska.

United Airlines passengers found themselves in a fetid situation when their Chicago-to-Hong Kong flight made an unscheduled landing in Alaska after a man had smeared feces all over some of the plane's bathrooms, airport officials said. Passengers were put up in hotels and the airline was working to get them to their destinations, the statement said. He was taken to the Providence Hospital to undergo a psychological evaluation and the airlines are yet to press any charges against him.

The plane made its emergency landing in Anchorage just before 6:30 p.m. local time, according to data from FlightAware, a live flight tracking website. The Delta flight from NY to Seattle had to land in Montana after the onboard toilets stopped working and passengers waited desperately to use the facilities. "That can't be very pleasant".
