Nikki Haley Applauds Iranian People's 'Tremendous Courage' In Anti-Regime Protests

Haley 'Iranian people are now finding their voice'

The US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley on Tuesday praised the courage of Iranian demonstrators and said protests across the Islamic Republic were spontaneous and not driven by outside forces. "All freedom-loving people must stand with their cause". They are virtually in every city in Iran.

She continued: "We must not be silent".

Washington's Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley dismissed the utility of possible direct talks between North and South Korea, warning that a harder line is necessary in light of reports that Pyongyang might be preparing for more ballistic missile tests.

"I hope that doesn't happen".

This was a day after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said he was open to negotiations but that his country would push ahead with "mass producing" nuclear warheads.

"The great Iranian people have been repressed for many years. This is the precise picture of a long-oppressed people rising up against their dictators", she added.

At least 21 people have died across Iran as protesters have clashed with police, which Haley's boss, President Donald Trump, said shows, "The people are finally getting wise as to how their money and wealth is being stolen and squandered on terrorism".

Iran's missile program is not in breach of its nuclear deal and will continue despite objections from the United States, President Hassan Rouhani has said. The worldwide community failed to do that in 2009.

Haley also said the United Nations must speak out in support of protesters in Iran where 21 people have died and at least 450 have reportedly been arrested during violent protests against the country's leadership. "If the Iranian dictatorship's history is any guide, we can expect more outrageous abuses in the days to come".

Haley also addressed the Trump administration's decision to withhold $255 million in aid from Pakistan for what it has described as harboring terrorists.

He held back judgment on Pyongyang's offer to talk, saying: "Perhaps that is good news, perhaps not we will see!"

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said North Korea might be "trying to drive a wedge of some sort" between the United States and South Korea and added that while it was up to Seoul to decide who it talked to: "We are very skeptical of Kim Jong Un's sincerity in sitting down and having talks".
