LG's 8K television will be around 7680×4320 pixels in resolution and for the attendees at CES, it will be definitely one of the major attractions at the show. Meanwhile, Samsung shifted from OLED to QLED panels previous year, making LG Display the only large-sized OLED display maker in the game.

LG Display's latest accomplishment comes with not one by two impressive claims. Much like the CES in the past, companies like LG and Samsung are set to display some next-gen TVs that push the boundaries of display. With that measurement, LG still won't beat the world's biggest display in a TV, but it definitely seats atop in terms of largest OLED panel. This would make it the highest resolution screen at that size in the world, which is saying something.

"OLED is clearly a next-generation technology leader and for this reason, LG Display is accelerating its research and development into OLED so that we can provide differentiated products to customers and markets", Kang added. As the Engadget report points LG Display is supplying large OLED panels to Sony and Panasonic as well, while Samsung has shifted focused to QLED TVs.

LG maintained that it's actually easier to come up with 8K resolution for an OLED display than a liquid crystal display (LCD) panel.

But OLED emits light by itself, so it doesn't lower luminance when the aperture ratio is lower, and is therefore best for 8K resolution, the company said. "LCDs with 8K resolution, however, inevitably get heavier and thicker because backlight units need to be placed directly behind the panels to achieve the same level of brightness and picture quality as 4K products", LG Display noted in a press release. From what we have heard so far, the display boasts 33 million pixels, four times that of 3,840x2,160 ultra high definition and 16 times more pixels than 1,920x1,080 full high definition. "OLED TVs are well-known for their superior picture quality with flawless black, more life-like colors, and wider viewing angles".
