Arrest in Call of Duty-linked 'swatting' death

Kansas law makes some false calls to police a felony, and if the call falsely claims to be about violent crimes or immediate danger to an individual, it can lead to more than a year in prison. "The incident is a nightmare for everyone involved".

Ramsey says it's not hard for gamers to find someone's address to give out, even if they are located in another country.

The FBI estimated that 400 such cases of "swatting" occur annually with numerous prank callers using some sort of caller identification spoofing software to disguise their phone numbers. Sometimes they will call local non-emergency lines instead of trying to prank 9-1-1.

"The irresponsible actions of a prankster put people and lives at risk", said Wichita Police Department Deputy Chief Troy Livingston. Police say 25-year-old Tyler Barriss is the person who called in the swatting prank.

"As he came to the front door, one of our officers discharged his weapon", Livingston said.

Officers went to the house and prepared for a hostage situation.

Mr Garner's death was ruled a homicide by medical examiners, but a grand jury did not charge any arresting officers in the case . Erica Garner became an activist after the death of her father, Eric Garner , in Staten Island, New York, in 2014.

A fake "swatting" call has left a 28-year-old man from Kansas dead after being accidentally shot by police. And it isn't known what cause the officer to shoot him on sight.

A man emerged from the house after police arrived. Finch died a few minutes later at a hospital. The man hasn't been identified by police, but Lisa Finch told the newspaper that the victim was her son, Andrew Finch. Chief Livingston said Finch was unarmed. Livingstone added, "This call was little peculiar for us".

UMG Gaming, which operates online gaming tournaments, said in an email to the Associated Press that the company is "doing everything we can to assist the authorities". "That was the information we were working off of".

Professional Call of Duty players on Twitter have attempted to explain the situation themselves (via CharlieINTEL). The shooting is said to have resulted from an argument that sparked between two Call of Duty players, which ignited the deadly swatting prank. He said no one has been arrested in connection with the hoax. At the time of writing, Swautistic's Twitter account has been suspended.

According to posts on Twitter, two gamers were arguing when one threatened to target the other with a swatting call.

"Specifically phone spoofing, which is showing that you're coming from a different phone number, freaking, which is using some different technologies to kind of mask who you are", said Ramsey. In this case, an innocent man was killed. He did not mention reports that an argument over online gaming was at the heart of the prank, although he said investigators had made good progress tracking online leads.

The officer will be placed on paid administrative leave, per department policy, as the incident is investigated. "It's completely illegal. It wastes resources that could be used by the police department in other ways". Kansas.com was the first to break this story. Police plan to release more information later today.
