Kabul Blast Targeted Shiites In Afghanistan, Also Creates Safety Concerns For Journalists

The attack the latest in a series to hit Afghan media groups in recent years follows an attack on a private television station in Kabul last month

At least 40 people were killed and many others wounded in multiple blasts at a Shiite cultural centre in Kabul on Thursday, officials said, in the latest violence to hit the Afghan capital. "We still do not know the target of the attack, but Afghan Voice Agency is in the area of the attack", interior ministry spokesman Najib Danish said.

According to them, there were at least two, maybe three suicide bombers who also used grenades in the attack.

In November, at least one security guard was killed as ISIL fighters stormed Shamshad TV, a private television station.

The attack has not yet been claimed by any insurgent group.

No claims of responsibility have been made for the explosion - in Kabul, Afghanistan - and the Taliban has issued a statement denying any involvement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi who landed in Gandhinagar, is welcomed by party chief Amit Shah and all the BJP's chief ministers. The party also announced that Nitin Patel will also continue as the Deputy Chief Minister of the state .

Afghan Journalists Safety Committee condemned the attack "in the strongest terms possible", writing on Twitter.

"In one of the deadliest years on record, journalists and other civilians continue to be ruthlessly targeted by armed groups", the statement added.

The organization, however, said that Afghanistan's constitution guaranteed freedom of information and stated it was the only country in the world to have created "committees for the safety of journalists" with representatives of the state and journalists' associations.

Over the years, several global media watchdogs have condemned the freedom and impunity given to the militants and other extremists to conduct such attacks against journalists.
