The zoo - an iconic London attraction in Regent's Park - was closed to visitors Saturday, but after consulting with fire experts, it said it's confident it can open safely on Sunday morning.

A spokeswoman for the LFB said: 'Approximately half of an adventure cafe and shop, which also contains an animal petting area, is now alight. Vets were called in to monitor the surviving animals. "We are all naturally devastated by this, but are immensely grateful to the fire brigade, who reacted quickly to the situation to bring the fire under control".

Some 70 firefighters and 10 fire engines have tackled a blaze at ZSL London Zoo.

"Approximately three quarters of an adventure cafe and shop and half of the roof is now alight".

London Ambulance said paramedics treated eight people at the scene - six for smoke inhalation and two for minor injuries, with one of those treated taken to hospital. Staffers living onsite rushed to move animals as quickly as they could, but they were too late to save Misha, a 9-year-old aardvark.

The zoo tweeted: 'ZSL is now dealing with an incident on site.

It took 72 firefighters just over three hours to put the fire out.

A statement said: "Fire crews from Kentish Town, Paddington, Euston, West Hampstead and other surrounding fire stations are at the scene".

The fire started shortly after 6 a.m. Saturday, and staff who live on the site immediately started moving animals to safety, officials said.
