German pilots' union calls first-ever Ryanair strike on Friday

Ryanair said it was recognising the Irish trade union and the pilot council for employees

Ryanair said it was recognising the Irish trade union and the pilot council for employees

The decision by one of Europe's largest airlines to deal with unions after years of opposition follows threatened pre-Christmas strike action by Irish-based pilots, which was called off earlier this week.

Pilots are asked to hold a four-hour "warning strike" from 5-9am (0400-0800 GMT) at German airports after initial talks with the Irish carrier were cancelled at short notice, Cockpit said in a statement Thursday.

"Ryanair has this morning written to the Impact union confirming in writing that it is recognising Impact and its Ryanair company pilot council", the carrier said in a statement.

The union there said the danger of industrial had "receded for the present" after Ryanair agreed to formally recognize Impact as the representative for the airline's pilots.

Germany's Cockpit (VC) said Ryanair broke off the first scheduled talks this week because it objected to two of the five union members at the table, which it said proved the company had "no desire to enter into constructive negotiations".

"Ryanair's public offer to conduct negotiations with VC can only be classified as a further publicity stunt".

However, as Ryanair attended a number of meetings with the unions, Irish pilot union IMPACT came away from the meeting disappointed with the lack of written confirmation of the airline's official recognition of pilot unions.

"In the history of the VC, there has never been a case in which the collective bargaining autonomy has been trampled on by an employer as it is now the case with Ryanair", it added.

Islanders reportedly awarded right to build new arena at Belmont Park
The team submitted a bid to build a new arena at Belmont Park , and according to Newsday it has been selected as the winning bid. The move to the Brooklyn arena was greeted with displeasure by fans, who always considered the team to be a Long Island staple.

"It'll be around security, terms of conditions of employment for our Ryanair pilots".

The airline said it had tabled proposals on pay and conditions, procedures and dispute resolution for Irish-based pilots, and "looks forward to concluding an early agreement on these issues with its Irish Ryanair pilot company council".

Passengers should consult the website for the latest updates, it said.

The airline and the union will meet on January 3 to agree a comprehensive recognition agreement.

Mr Connolly said the breakthrough was made possible by the resolve of Ryanair pilots.

"My colleagues are considering that correspondence, and we'll also obviously be talking to representatives of Ryanair pilots who were also involved in Tuesday evening's meeting".

Bellew described the action as a "bolt from the blue" after good dialogue with the union at a meeting on Wednesday and said he would consider working with other unions instead of VC.
