SD reports first flu death of the season

Kentucky health officials report "widespread" flu for the first time this flu season.

The most compelling statistic is the increase in reported flu cases from this time previous year.

The flu season has started early. The number is slightly higher than this time a year ago, but influenza activity tends to increase in December.

According to an Oct. 4 directive by MCMC, workforce members, volunteers and students who do not receive the flu shot must wear a mask within six feet of a patient during the flu season, which is typically between October through May, with a peak in February.

The symptoms of influenza usually develop over a matter of a few hours and include a high temperature, sore muscles, dry cough, headache and sore throat.

Giants get Evan Longoria in trade with Rays
Death is inescapable; puppies are adorable; and Evan Longoria will rake in Tampa Bay despite never posting an OPS above.900. They may now be able to keep some of their other top players and continue to rebuild with a rather impressive farm system.

"It's still possible to get a flu shot, but it takes two weeks for the vaccine to be effective", Burton said.

Dr Kelleher said: "People in at-risk groups can get the vaccine for free as they are at much greater risk of becoming seriously unwell if they catch flu, and sadly many end up in hospital".

Believe it or not, wash your hands. Scrub your hands for at least 30 seconds with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand cleaner. Vaccination is more important for people with weakened immune systems, as well as those who are pregnant, elderly or live with or care for others at high risk. Cover your mouth when you cough. Vaccinations are available at Kentucky's local health departments, pharmacies, and medical providers. Although most people fully recover from the flu, some experience severe illness like pneumonia and respiratory failure, and the flu can sometimes be fatal.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tells us, however, that they still believe our flu vaccine is on track to be 39 percent effective, like a year ago.
