Facebook puts toe in music streaming video with UMG deal

Facebook and Universal just cut a huge music licensing deal

Depending on the nature of future music-based social media experiences made possible by this agreement, the impact on the music industry could be palpable.

Over the past few years, Facebook has been more aggressive with removing videos with copy-written music, but this could allow the rules to be slightly more lax while having UMG taking a cut of ad revenue. UMG is the first music company to strike a deal with Facebook, the social media behemoth platform which in March hit 2 billion monthly active users, making it the world's biggest social app in terms of logged-on users.

Right now, if Facebook's regular users upload videos that contain Universal's music, the videos will get taken down.

A spokesperson for Universal Music had not responded to a request for clarification, as of publishing.

So, on the one hand this is what publishers and labels have been asking for in 2017 - an initial deal to license Facebook for the music contained within user-uploaded videos.

Marvin Lewis stepping down as Cincinnati Bengals' coach
Lewis accepted the job on January 14, 2003, when the Bengals were coming off the worst season in franchise history (2-14). They drove 75 yards in nine plays on the opening drive, which was capped by Murray's 1-yard touchdown run.

The other major record companies are nearing similar deals, sources tell CASHBOX, A joint statement from the company said the deals will "serve as a foundation for a strategic partnership roadmap that will deliver new music-based experiences online".

Tamara Hrivnak, head of music business development and partnerships, Facebook, said of the deal: "There is a magnetic relationship between music and community building". In the pipeline, it also paves the way for a potential Facebook Music service, which could rival Spotify and Apple Music for on-demand streaming playback.

Facebook has increasingly gone head-to-head with YouTube on its signature turf of videos. Today the social network announced its first major-label licensing deal, with Universal Music Group.

And in August, the company launched Facebook Watch in the United States, a sub-section on the platform that like YouTube offers unique, quirky videos by homebody presenters unlikely to be cast by television executives.
