You can view it to confirm and tag yourself, ignore it, report it, or message the poster to have words about the photo. Using the same technology that allows Facebook to suggest friends you may want to tag in photos or videos, the new face recognition will help users detect when others might be attempting to use their image as profile picture. The exception to this rule, however, is if someone uploads a photo of you as their profile picture.

If you're one of those poor saps who often gets told you look like someone else, get ready for a barrage of notifications from Facebook saying someone uploaded a photo of you.

He said the new feature give users more control by informing them when their photo has been posted.

And that, in turn, means Facebook has a new powerful tool for mapping who knows who on the social network.

Facebook says number of government data requests up considerably
Copies of the NSLs, as well as the government's authorization letters are available for download below. Some 70,000 solicitations for copyright came to Instagram, with 685,000 bits of substance evacuated.

Facebook has today announced that it has added face recognition to the optional tools that help people better manage their identity on the social network.

Facebook's database of facial recognition has an impression of users' faces, which it calls a template. But computers are getting better at recognizing us, and now Facebook has chose to use that to spot photos you're not tagged in. If you've already opted out of that feature, you will also be automatically opted out of the new facial recognition features. Finally, the company is also going to use facial recognition to describe pictures to the visually impaired; someone looking at a photo using a screen-reader can hear which of their friends are in the picture by name. The goal of the scanning, according to Facebook, is to alert you if someone has publicly uploaded a photo of you that you don't know about, especially if they are trying to impersonate you. The new facial recognition features will be available in your settings soon, but not in Canada or the European Union where Facebook does not offer facial recognition.

The features demonstrate how Facebook is using a trove of facial recognition data, a type of data that has become a key focus for tech titans. However, he argued against strict regulation of facial recognition technology, comparing current fears to similar concerns in the late 1800s over cameras.
