Twitter Suspends Britain First Leaders Who President Trump Retweeted

Twitter starts enforcing new policies on violence, abuse, and hateful conduct

Among those accounts suspended Monday are those of white nationalist Jared Taylor and his American Renaissance group, and British far-right activists Jayda Fransen and Paul Golding, along with the American Nazi Party.

It coincides with the platform enforcing new rules and guidelines created to make Twitter a "safer environment".

Fransen hogged the global limelight when US President Donald Trump retweeted in November some of her posts featuring controversial anti-Muslim videos.

The leader and deputy leader of far-right organisation Britain First have been banned from Twitter as the social media company begins to enforce new rules.

Twitter says it will now begin enforcing the new rules it announced last month to combat abuse and hateful conduct, including threats of violence and physical harm.

Founded in 2006, the San Francisco company had called itself "the free speech wing of the free speech party" and tried to stay out of battles among users.

Twitter, which allows users to display pseudonyms, said that it will also take down accounts that use their display names, profile bio or user name to target a protected group of people with violent threats or abusive slurs.

Marvin Lewis stepping down as Cincinnati Bengals' coach
Lewis accepted the job on January 14, 2003, when the Bengals were coming off the worst season in franchise history (2-14). They drove 75 yards in nine plays on the opening drive, which was capped by Murray's 1-yard touchdown run.

Tweets can still include hate imagery, but users will have to click through a warning to see them, the company said. It's also classifying hateful imagery like logos, symbols, or images that are used to promote hostility against others based on race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity as "sensitive media".

As a private company, Twitter has the legal right to block any speech it wants, since the First Amendment only applies to government control of speech.

Twitter declined to comment on any individual accounts and had no immediate information on the number of users impacted by the new enforcement, a spokesperson said.

The so-called alt-right, a coalition born online that combines racism, white nationalism, anti-feminism and populism in its politics and meme-driven trolling of others, has for months been building alternatives to Twitter and other social media sites due to increased crackdowns on hate speech and ideology. In our efforts to be more aggressive here, we may make some mistakes and are working on a robust appeals process.

One rule regarding violence takes into account Twitter users' activity offline, forbidding users from affiliating with organisations that promote violence against civilians either on or off the site.

This isn't the first time Twitter has targeted white nationalists and other leaders associated with the far-right.
