Heartbreaking Kim Jong-hyun the lead singer of South Korea's top boy band SHINee has died in an apparent suicide after being found unconscious in a flat

Jonghyun was taken to the hospital in Seoul where he was later pronounced dead after being found unconscious in his apartment - reportedly after inhaling toxic fumes from coal burning on a frying pan.

His anxious sister then called emergency services, says the Daily Mirror. Kim also had a successful solo career as a singer-songwriter.

"We are sorry to be the bringer of such tragic, heart-breaking news", said the entertainment company, home to Jonghyun's South Korean boy band Shinee, according to Koreaboo. His last public appearance was at a solo concert titled "Inspired" on December 9-10 in Seoul, and he was scheduled to hold concerts with SHINee members in Tokyo and Osaka in February, Yonhap said. He is reported to have sent a goodbye message to his sister via text message.

SHINee was founded in 2008, and soon came to be called "the princes of K pop" for their chart-topping prowess and their reputation as one of the biggest groups in both Japan and Korea, recording a string of Japanese-language albums and selling out the 55,000-seat Tokyo Dome.
